Are manners important in business? Do they still matter? Or are they something that applied to your grandparents? In this video, I will consider the arguments…
Hello and welcome to the Gavin Ingham Show. I am here today in sunny Spain and I want to ask you one question, “How important do you think manners are in business today?”
I was watching the UK General Election leadership debate last week and, as I was watching, the leaders were getting up and saying their piece and in the background the other parties were Tweeting online; they were Tweeting contrary opinions, they were debating the ideas.
At one point, Tim Farron, the leader of the Lib Dems, got up and he made a comment about education. Almost immediately the Labour Party Press Office put a Tweet out questioning the Lib Dem’s record around education. The Lib Dem Press Office responded with, “You’ve taken the night off. Shut Up.”
“You’ve taken the night off. Shut up.”
Shut up. Do you think that is professional? Do you think that is acceptable? Do you think that is reasonable?
In fact, I was saying to my wife that I thought that it was completely unacceptable and that I was thinking about recording a video about this and, as I was talking to my wife, my little daughter, who is four and was sitting in the corner of the room, said, “Naughty Daddy. Naughty Daddy.”
So, I went over to her and I said, “Beatrice. What is the matter?” She said, “You said “Shut up”; that’s really, really rude.”
Interesting. Even my daughter at the age of four knows that saying “shut up” is rude; she knows that it is unacceptable; she knows that it is unacceptable in life… let alone in business. Why then do a lot of people seem to think that manners don’t matter anymore?
Manners are critically important. I believe that manners differentiate you from people who cannot be bothered. From the basic “please” and “thank you” to the way you behave and the way you are, manners set you apart and they differentiate you. Manners are important. As my old grandmother used to say, “Manners maketh man.”
In today’s society, people do business with people, people buy from people, and one of the most important things that differentiates people is manners.
Do you agree? Do you still think manners are important? Do they make a difference in business? Or are they something from the past?
I’d be interested in hearing your opinions…
This was not a political post. It was not supposed to show any favouritism in any direction. The parties used just happened to be the ones that made the story that I was looking for. No MPs were injured in the making of this video.
