I feel too many salespeople think they’ve already mastered sales skills so all they need now is to get lucky or work harder. Well, there is no room for the word “luck” in business and it’s insanity to work harder at things that aren’t working in the first place.

The key to sales success is a continuous sales training program. It’s great to be reminded of the things you should be doing and we all can pick up some new sales skills and techniques every so often.

I love to read, and that include everything, but I have to admit that I don't read enough about this topic. Sometimes we think we know what we're doing and it works well enough so why bother. What most adults forget is the fact that we can always learn something new. Thanks for reminding this adult that reading is learning, and it's something that's always worth while.

Jim - you're totally right... If you don't want to read, there's plenty of good stuff for your ipod. I've always liked listening to audios, great for the car or when jogging, makes good use of your time too.

Gavin: you make a good point - we are never too old to start learning. One small point that you skipped over is that in this age of the iPod, there is no excuse for not keeping up with the latest in new sales techniques because even if you don't like to read, you can now listen. Put that time in car or on the train to good use!

Hi Gavin,

I was and still am an avid reader of sales books.
Surprised you didn't mention any you recommend in this article.
I'd recommend: "How I raised myself from Failure to Success in Selling" by Frank Bettger, "Sales on the Line" by Sharon Drew Morgan, "SPIN Selling" by Neil Rackman and "Unlimited Selling Power" by Donald Moine.
Happy reading, Greg
